I'm still surprised that every lyrics page I've ever seen claims that Tanita Tikaram's "Twist in my sobriety" says "timid smile and pause to free" rather than "timid smile and poised to flee". I'm even more surprised that Tikaram actually does seem to sing "pause to free" rather than "poised to flee".

I have no clue what the former is supposed to mean. I like my heard version lots better.

"Post the first line from your 25 most recent fanfics and try to find a pattern." Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] homasse.

Well, I've not written nearly that many fics, not even if I include ficlets, but here goes:

1) Europa held her new-born baby next to her breast and sang to it, sometimes in her own Phoenician tongue, half-remembered songs of her childhood, sometimes in the alien tongue of the Cretans which she was quickly learning, in fragments and hesitant pieces.... ("Names and Forms" - Gargoyles fic)

2) It had been more difficult for Simon than for anyone else. ("Reticent Confessions", HP fic set in Barbara Purdom's "Psychic Serpent" universe)

3) "I have been here before... " ("Dreams of the Kisei: A Prologue" HnG fic)

4) She had moaned his name once, in the throes of passion, as he was thrusting inside her, as he was bringing her to the cusp of orgasm. ("Broken souls: Entr'acte, in the dark" HnG fanfic, sequel to the previous)

5) “My father said what?? Oh father, father! You can be so unthinking sometimes.” ("Mighty" Tolkien ficlet)

6) "Please, some money, dear sir! Our mother is sick, we need--" ("Traits Revealed" HP 100-word drabble)

7) She cuts herself, she screams names at teachers, she burns her diaries and runs away from home. ("Hateful Memories" Buffy 100-word drabble)

--

Common element in all of the above? I guess that I tend to begin with a scene indicating the emotional state of an individual: Europa's parental love, Simon's desolation, Hikaru's uncertainty, Akari's need, Luthien's amusement, some random kids' despair and poverty, Dawn's complete emotional meltdown.

I think I miss writing fics.

I liked this character quiz, because (unlike most of its ilk) it had like 50 or 60 different possible results from 7 or 8 different fandoms.

Which Fantasy/SciFi Character Are You?
A brave and loyal associate full of optimism, you remain true to your friends and their efforts, to whatever end.

But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.

Samwise is a character in the Middle-Earth universe.

I want to rewatch "Kill Bill" one of these days. It's an appropriate flick for feelings of murderous vengefulness, I think.

Also noting I have several half-finished reviews on a number of books and films, kept as text files all over my desktop or as Gmail drafts. Need to start finishing those up also. Perhaps today I'll post one or two of them.

And I also really *really* need to start searching for a job and sending out CVs. I'm *way* behind on doing that, which alas most likely means there'll be an empty period after I finish with the army early next month. Ugh. I really should have started sending CVs a month ago.

Drabble-meme! In return for the drabble I got from joudama, now it's the my friendlist's turn to make requests to me. Ofcourse I'm afraid that as you all know I'm going to the army Wednesday, so I won't actually have the time to fulfill the requests for a long while :-( I do promise you all however that I'll get round to them the very moment I have the chance and means to write about them. You'll just need to have a bit of patience. But I'll truly enjoy thinking about the requests made, so please do make them. :-)

Every person on your flist gets to request a drabble from you. In return, they have to post this in their journal. Post all fandoms you're willing to write for. Your friends can pick a relationship, a story arc, a missing scene, or pretty much anything they want, unless the author has previously mentioned that they will not write it. They comment with what they want, and you write drabbles and post it in your LiveJournal.

Here's a list of fandoms to choose from:

Middle-earth (Tolkien)
Harry Potter
Gargoyles
Babylon 5
Hikaru no Go
Bleach
Earthsea (Ursula Le Guin)
Robin Hobb (the Farseer/Liveship traders/Tawny Man trilogy of trilogies)
Enderverse (Orson Scott Card)
Sandman (Neil Gaiman)

The list is just indicative: If you want anything from outside the list, that you know I'm familiar with (i.e. by knowing I've seen the movie/watched the series/read the book), you're again welcome.

*g* And here's the lone restriction I place: I won't write slash which would require me to twist both characters to the breaking point. This means: no problem with writing Talia/Ivanova, or Fitz/Fool, but don't you dare request Harry/Draco or Frodo/Sam. :-)

As a sidenote, any people I know without a livejournal account are also invited to make requests. Just as with the rest, you'll just need to be patient, however. :-)

A meme, not like most others, on a thing worth remembering -- taken from [livejournal.com profile] bellatrys.

From A Man For All Seasons, winner of the 1966 Oscar for Best Picture:

Lady Alice More:
Arrest him!

Sir Thomas More:
For what?

Lady Alice:
He's dangerous!

Will Roper:
For all we know he's a spy!

Margaret More:
Father, that man's bad!

More:
There's no law against that.

Roper:
There is - God's law!

More:
Then let God arrest him.

Lady Alice:
While you talk he's gone!

More:
And go he should, if he were the Devil himself, until he broke the law.

Roper:
So, now you give the Devil the benefit of law!

More:
Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?

Roper:
Yes, I'd cut down every law in England to do that!

More:
Oh? And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws, from coast to coast, Man's laws, not God's! And if you cut them down - and you're just the man to do it! - do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I'd give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety's sake!

Pass it on.

Ouchie.

You know, if I had just tripped and scratched the surface of my hand, while returning a DVD last night, that wouldn't even merit mention. But when, in the process of using a handkerchief to wipe my hand and checking out the scratch, I am distracted enough that ten meters away I step on that broken piece of pavement that normally ought to contain a tree but it doesn't, and as a result I fall again even worse, and hurt my already hurt hand -- ah, that's a bit of utterly stupid clumsiness that requires special commemoration.

Anyway, new pic above. Like it? Used this which you can download from here.

And a meme. Reminded to do it by [livejournal.com profile] eledhwenlin, but expanded to cover the Top 200 books of an earlier BBC meme gacked from [livejournal.com profile] synaesthete7.

Still haven't talked about Delphi any, btw. Soon.

Edit: New pic wasn't showing previously. Fixed it.

First a map of the countries of all the countries I have visited in the past:

Create your own visited country map

*g* As you see that's a sizeable portion of Western Europe, but alas, nothing from other continents...

And here's btw a nerdiness test:

61.904761904761905% of me is a huge nerd! How about you?

Now, that's quite a lot -- right now I'm betting that none of my friends will achieve as high a score in this. :-)

Anyway, try it out people! It's fun.

This rather ego-stroking meme, taken from [livejournal.com profile] homasse's livejournal, though I removed two questions and added two others. *g* Actually not that many people I personally know have lj accounts, but, ah well... I'm in the mood to procrastinate today...

1. Give me a nickname and explain why you picked it.
2. How long have you known me?
3. When and how did we first meet?
4. What was your first impression?
5. Do you still think that way about me now?
6. What do you think my weakness is?
7. What do you think my strength is?
8. What makes me happy?
9. What makes me sad?
10. What makes me angry?
11. What reminds you of me?
12. If you could give me anything what would it be?
13. How well do you know me?
14. When's the last time you saw me?
15. Ever wanted to tell me something but couldn't?
16. Do you think I could kill someone?
17. Describe me in one word.
18. Do you think our friendship is getting stronger/weaker/or staying the same?
19. Do you feel that you could talk to me about anything and I would listen?
20. Are you going to put this on your livejournal and see what I say about you?

Going out tomorrow and getting the Greek translation of OoTP. Wee! *g* Have already read the original of course, but hey, still a cause for merriment.

Until then, here's a quiz:

First a Battle Royale quiz )

And for a survey of my morality and personality go here: http://www.outofservice.com/morality/results/?morality=67&political=71&social=71&o=41&c=4&e=5&a=63&n=27

I think I'm slightly more liberal socially than this mentions - but I hesitated to use most "Always Right" answers, since that's too absolute for my tastes. Pretty much everything can be occasionally wrong, given the circumstances.

Anyway, my birthday was today... Didn't do much, just took a break off my programming so as to update my page (uploaded a small "hold" I had made for the game "Deadly Rooms of Death" which you can freely download through www.drod.net) and ofcourse to update this livejournal as well...

As for my mood... Well, I'd first chosen "lonely" but that isn't exactly right. It's more like a weird combination of loneliness but not actually wanting to talk with (or be around) people either, which is probably why I've not opened Trillian even though I've been on the Internet most of the day. So, probably "melancholy" fits a bit better. Ah, well...

And I've been rereading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix... You know, I've decided that I really like this book. Just like with The Silmarillion many years ago, I've discovered that I can turn to a random page and consistently find a passage I would enjoy rereading...

J.K.Rowling has definitely created one of the most fun series of books I've ever read, despite the occasional flaws and all.
