Written yesterday, for the [livejournal.com profile] hp100's 100-word challenge of the week: Write something about a person's first (intentional or unintentional) signs of magic.

Didn't come out much good really, but hey just a drabble, right? :-)

Traits Revealed

"Please, some money, dear sir! Our mother is sick, we need--"
"Don't touch me, you foul little beasts!" THWACK!

The 5-year-old boy watches from afar and his anger is a roaring furnace. The rich Muggle suddenly discovers himself falling over, covered in boils and tentacles, while wallet, watch, clothes fly away from him and to the young beggar-children's surprised hands.

Terrible trouble follows -- dejinxing the Muggle, obliviating the witnesses -- but, nonetheless, in the end of a very long day, Father expresses nothing but pride in his son.

Albus smiles, relieved -- and promises to temper compassion with caution next time.

Ari, I like your story, considering of course you only had 100 words in your disposal.
So, happy new year, may it be full of pleasant surprises!!!

I really enjoyed this drabble-- it goes more for poignancy than instant angst or a punchline, which makes it rather unique.

And I love the (intentional?) reference to Dickens. Please sir, may I have another?

BTW mind if I friend you? It'll help me keep up with your very cool occasional bits of writing.

I knew it felt Dickensian -- intentionally made it so, given the timeframe this must be taking place -- though I didn't have one single particular reference in mind. That's from Oliver Twist, you mentioned, right? I've, alas, read that work only in a Greek translation... :-)

*g* And as I said earlier, I don't mind you friending me at all...
