Mainly the latter, but not quite. It's not so much a matter of being "mistaken" for angels, but rather of taking on the role of one. Kinda like a human becoming a priest, or a missionary, or a prophet. Even humans were sometimes called "angels", long ago. The word means nothing more than "messenger", after all. :-)
"Demons" will be a slightly more fluid category, and will depend on who you ask and what religious system you are following. The protagonist would probably call such those who at one time opposed the "order of heaven" under the banner of either Lucifer Ahriman, or Lucifer Samael.
And, btw, even if you have to post as "anonymous" not having an lj of your own, could you still please sign under your post with a name or a nickname? It feels a bit bizarre divulging info to a completely nameless entity. Thanks. :-)
