In season 6, Buffy had more problems being Buffy than being the slayer. When Tara was killed and Willow went bad, she went completely into slayer mode, which was why she wasn't the one who could save her.
Make sure you read the season 8 comic from Dark Horse when you finish season 7. Great stuff.
