I can't speak about Google Desktop since I've never used it, but I think it's the first time I've heard Gmail ads being described as "intrusive". If anything it seems to me their very philosophy is the lack of intrusiveness. In a world where half the commercial sites one visits popup Flash messages about cars or drink or porn or what ever subject will *not* interest you, I think that GoogleAds' lack of flashiness *and* their lack of irrelevance is something to be praised. A limited handful of words in plain text about a topic I've already shown interest in, and a plain-old link. That's it.
And where spamming is concerned, how exactly are they gonna spam me with any effectiveness, when one of the positives of Gmail is that it's reduced the annoyance of spam to near-nil? Before Gmail I used to get hundreds of Spam mails I needed to sort through, losing several minutes of my life every day. Now I get hundreds of spam that's automatically (and accurately) relegated to a "Spam Folder". I can glance through it once a month in a handful of secs, and empty it with a handful of clicks.
In short the very things you've seemed to classify as "evil", I seem to classify as "good". :-)
