HBP Spoiler review - Chapters 15-18
Chapter 15
The escalating warfare between Ron and Hermione is amusing. Ron, you git, "free agent"? I think you misspelled "h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e-b-a-s-t-a-r-d".
Other amusing moments: Madam Pince's "What have you been doing to that book, you depraved boy?" "Despoiled! Desecrated! Befouled!"
Since I loved Luna's character, and I loved her here as well, I'm disappointed that HBP doesn't contain more of her. Ugh. I wish she had become as much a regular as Ron and Hermione.
Hermione's date with McLaggen rates uncontestedly as the stupidest thing she has ever done. It's probably a happy coincidence for Hermione that even with the ever-growing seriousness of the books, they'll probably not ever become as dark to show the full possible consequences of dating untrustworthy guys who can't their hands to themselves.
I believe Malfoy when he says he didn't do it. I also have to wonder what it is he is to do.
Chapter 16
Two connections I made with non-Harry Potter events.
Fenrir Greyback reminds me just a little bit of Lupus Deus in "Clan of the Cats". Mainly the whole "respect from prosecution through war" and the conflict between werewolves and wizards. Though in Clan of the Cats I think it was more like conflict between different weres with wizards only intervening. And Marcus Lupus didn't create any werewolves ofcourse. But it's a common theme.
And the difference between Fudge and Scrimgeour reminds me of the difference between Democrats-as-Republicans-see-them and Republicans-as-Democrats-see-them in the "war on terror". Fudge and his supporters had their heads in a hole about the need to battle a growing threat. Scrimgeour and *his* supporters don't actually care if they're doing the right thing or not as long as they're doing *something*, even if that includes sending innocent people to the torture ofAbu GhraibAzbakan.
Tonk's Patronus seems to have become Padfoot then? Amusing, sorta. I think that atleast one fic has hypothesized that *Harry's* Patronus would become that.
That the book is 50 years old is surprising -- Voldemort's the only possible candidate from that time-period and JKR has already ruled him out. Unless the book passed through more than one hands, I guess.
Chapter 17
More backstory details on Voldemort and his family: all cool though not especially . A potential plot-hole filled which I believe had been noticed by some was covered when we're told that the Ministry can't actually detect underage magic. It just detects magic in general. When underage magic is taking place in a magical home, Ministry's powerless to know what's going on: Hence all the various bits of magic we're told the twins have been doing (against Ron usually) over the years.
Largely unnoticed by Harry himself, this (I think) is the first time Dumbledore has given him an actual *mission* -- as opposed to Harry just butting in himself to whatever danger lurks around.
"We must try not to sink beneath our anguish, Harry" was I felt a very bizarre sentence for Dumbledore to say in that context -- until a couple seconds later I realized he was just joking. *g* That's what's bad with smileys not existing in novels.
"Abstinence" as a password? Given the raging hormones all over the place, I have to wonder if alcohol is truly the only thing that the Fat Lady has in mind.
Chapter 18
This chapter has one of the most amusing and unexpected twists so far -- with Ron's "I can't stop thinking about her" probably the whole readership thought he was talking about Hermione, and Harry thought he was talking about Lavender -- and he ends talking about different altogether. The following love-potion attitude is also greatly amusing 'till the end.
Hehe -- I kinda agree with Hermione when she says "I mean why mention it, then"? concerning the book just mentioning Horcruxes in order to say that it won't talk about them.
Not any more comments here.
